Les Edgerton, the author of nine books including the writing how-to book on great beginnings called Hooked, lists five story openings to avoid. Here are two:
- Never start with a dream. It’s disappointing to get involved in the story only to find out it was all in the character’s mind.
- Never open with a character awakening to an alarm clock. This can be seen as a beginning of a long boring list of activities before there’s any action.
