I moved Stanley the Cat’s food three days ago. Now his bowls, which brim with two types of food, sit by his water bowl. Yet he remains by the empty spot at the end of the kitchen cabinets and beckons me to feed him there.
No matter how many times I set him by his food bowls, he returns to the empty spot. A creature of habit or victim of memory loss? Or is he just plain stubborn?
Sometimes I have déjà vu with my writing, echoing words from one paragraph to another. Repeating the same conflict in different scenes. Do the recurrent themes appear in your writing? Do favorite traits imbue your characters?
Don’t be like Stanley, returning to what he always knew worked. A victim of habit. Explore new territory. You might find something delicious waits for you there.
