A Wifty Way to Forget

Wifty: eccentrically silly, giddy, or inane : ditzy

Here’s a poem first published in 2008 in Hanging Moss Journal. Is the character inane or sane? And how far would you go to forget?

She wants the sweetness
to linger
so, she stuffs another
caramel in her mouth
that the sugar
will make her heart
run like those
toy ducks
who flap their feet
at the end of a pole
as children push them
along the sidewalk,
or like a card clipped to the
bike spokes
snapping downhill—
a free ride,
pigtails streaming,
wind pushing away
the surprise that
crowds her mind,
while bits of memory flutter to Earth
settling in the rough spots,
their shadows burning up
in the sun.
